Facebook app crashing for some users

My Twitter stream is being swamped by people claiming the iOS Facebook app is crashing for them today. It doesn't seem to have anything to do with the recent iOS 6.0.1 or iOS 6.1 beta 1 firmwares either, and people who haven't gone near either of those are reporting the problem. It also doesn't seem to be a problem for everyone, as other people are saying they're just fine.

Maybe some piece of content is causing a problem for those folks unlucky enough to have loaded it? Who knows. Let's hope it fixes itself, or Facebook fixes it, as soon as possible.

In the meantime, if you use Facebook for iOS, let me know if it's working for you, and if it's not, how it's not.

And if it's not, remember, you can always use facebook.com to get at least some of your fix in the meantime...

Great news for all of you on AT&T today as the LG Optimus G (see our review) and the Sony Xperia TL (see our hands-on) are available now.  The Optimus G can be had for $199 with a 2-year contract while and Xperia TL costs $99. Both can be bought in-store as well as online.

If you're concerned with having the top of the line phone, the Optimus G will be your choice. LG has done a fantastic job and has made it one of the top phones on the market. In case you've forgotten, it packs a 1.5GHz quad-core processor, 1GB RAM, 32GB of storage, a 4.7-inch True HD IPS Plus display, 8MP rear camera and 1.3MP front-facing.

The Xperia TL, known as the 'Bond phone' because James Bond will use it in the upcoming film Skyfall, is a great phone, especially at the $99 price point. It sports a 4.6-inch HD Reality display, 13MP camera, 1.5GHz quad-core processor, Android 4.04 (Ice Cream Sandwich) and NFC support.

Farragomate is a social fridge magnet game where you make up sentences

You know those fridge magnet kits composed of a whole bunch of words? The ones you put all over your fridge door and then try to arrange into all sorts of juvenile and/or amusing sentences. Well, Farragomate is the social, webby version of that very same pastime.

You get to play with a bunch of random strangers in real-time, and make up sentences out of a pre-set collection of words, including some fairly naughty ones, and all players' nicknames. As you can imagine, some of the results are not child-friendly.

There are ten rounds to a game. Once a round is done, players get to vote for their favorite sentence from that round. You can't vote for your own creation, of course. There's in-game chat, too.

I think the vocabulary could be made a bit more eclectic, but even as it is, it's a nice way to spend a few minutes and meet random strangers on the Internet (always a thrilling experience).

Arc Squadron review

Arc Squadron launched on the App Store today, summoning many memories for old-school Star Fox players. The on-rails space-themed shooter game takes players through a variety of treacherous interstellar scenarios, who must guide a variety of ships through obstacles with smooth and natural-feeling swipe-gestures, while unloading advanced weaponry and technology against the foes they encounter.

Steering your ship is as easy as dragging your finger around the screen. As your ship moves, so do the crosshairs, and if they rest on top of an enemy, you'll automatically start shooting. Secondary weapons and equipment are activated through taps, while you can get an extra bit of maneuverability with sideways swipes to execute barrel rolls. I was really impressed with the implementation of touch controls here, and was extremely happy that there wasn't some bastardized version of joystick controls. Controls are simple, intuitive, and allow players to focus on the challenging gameplay. 

Each level is scored out of four stars, depending on how many of the level's enemies you blow up, how much damage you take, and how many of the bonus cubes you pick up. Currency is earned for destroying alien ships or bought through in-app purchases. Those Arcbucks are used to buy new ships and secondary weapons, upgrade existing ones, or get one of the many different paint jobs available. The upgrade structure is really nicely streamlined and not too complicated while still offering a solid amount of tactical variety. Though level progression is fairly linear, there are a handful of branching bonus missions that aren't required in order to move along in the storyline. As linear as the gameplay may be, there's an obscene amount of levels to chew through - don't count on finishing this game any time soon. The game's replay value is stunted a little bit by the scripted nature of the combat encounters, but if you're the type of player that loves really digging in on a level and memorizing each tiny little detail of a stage and meeting those challenges flawlessly, there's definitely plenty of opportunity in Arc Squadron.

Game Center support extends as far as leaderboards among your buddies and tracking various achievements, though Arc Squadron itself keeps close tabs on specific stats, like how many of the total stars you've collected, how many enemies you've killed, and even how many barrel rolls you've made. No love on cloud saving unfortunately, so be sure to pick iPad or iPhone before you get started. The graphics and audio are both top-notch, and well-suited for the arcade feel the devs are going for. The soundtrack has an amply sci-fi feel, while effects are well-timed, electric, and diverse. The voice acting, though a bit hammed-up, is well done. UI elements are all large, bold, and readable. The wide range of fantastic weaponry and settings produce a bunch of exciting lighting effects, but by far the most impressive part of the game's graphics are the stages. They're all crafted with a rich amount of detail, and despite it all happening in space-themed regions, there's ample visual variety.

All in all, Arc Squadron has excellent graphics, smooth controls, tight, twitch-based challenges, and heaps of compelling upgrades. Pick this up for $0.99 before the price goes up to a regular $4.99.

Toyota pulls Cydia theme and ads to appease Apple

In news that will no doubt shake the very bedrock of your belief system, Apple has asked Toyota to remove its Scion theme and its advertising from ModMyi, a Cydia repository. The Scion theme has been available for weeks, but after it received a ton of press in the last couple of days, Apple finally lashed out.

It's not like we should be surprised, considering Apple has claimed in the past that jailbreaking is illegal -- but at the same time, did the Cupertino cronies hear about the ruling that made circumventing DRM, and thus jailbreaking, legal? Anyway, whether Toyota was supporting illegal, legal, or deliciously gray and ambiguous, activity, it doesn't matter: Apple asked Toyota to remove the theme, and Toyota graciously bent over and capitulated.

This story raises a much more interesting topic, though: this is the first time a multinational company has publicly acknowledged and embraced the jailbreak community. Considering jailbreaking is technically legal, and Cydia's creator, Jay Freeman, estimates that up to 9% of OS devices are jailbroken, it simply makes good, commercial sense to target jailbreakers with ads. Toyota was simply trying to make some money, for shame!

As long as Apple continues to throw around its increasingly-expansive mass, the legality of jailbreaking will continue to be inconsequential. It will be interesting to see if another big company dares embrace the jailbreak community after this, too.

Celebrate Halloween with your kids and Charlie Brown with It's The Great Pumpkin for iPhone and iPad

It's The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown is a children's book for the iPhone and iPad based off the the classic Halloween Charlie Brown story. In the book, Linus and Sally wait for the Great Pumpkin, a fantasy similar to Santa Claus that Linus believes in, while Charlie Brown and the rest of the Peanuts gang to trick-or-treating and attend Violet's Halloween party. In addition to the story, The Great Pumpkin also lets you create an avatar that looks like a Peanuts character, dress him/her up in a costume, carve pumpkins, and more.

The book included in the Great Pumpkin has a great design and has the look and feel of an actual book. For each scene, there may be several sections of text to read and instead of showing all the text on the book at once, the text is displayed at the bottom of the screen and you can turn pages of text without turning the entire page. The original voice of Charlie Brown, Peter Robbins, narrates the story as you read along.

Each page in the book has great illustrations that can be mildly interacted with. Most things you touch will wiggle and many of the characters will repeat their lines from from the story. If you tap falling leaves, they will grow in size and move to the "front" of the book. Sometimes there are other interactions available, like playing piano with Schroeder or bobbing for apples.

In addition to the story, It's The Great Pumpkin also lets your child create a custom avatar that looks like a Peanuts character. You can choose between different skin colors, hairstyles, head shapes, clothing, and more. All of the Halloween costumes must be purchased with coins or candy. You can buy coins as in-app purchases and candy is earned by completing achievements. For example, when I tapped on enough leaves in the story, I earned 6000 pieces of candy.

There is also a section of The Great Pumpkin that lets you carve your own pumpkin. You child will be really excited when s/he sees their personal pumpkin appear in story mode.

The good

It's The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown is a great childrens book to read with your kids this Halloween. It's fun, interactive, educational, and funny. The bonus of being able to create an avatar and carve a pumpkin makes the app more than just a book and is sure to provide your kids with a lot of Halloween fun.

Zen Coding high-speed HTML shorthand plug-in updated

Zen Coding made quite a splash when we first covered it almost a year ago. For those who aren't familiar, Zen is a fantastic form of shorthand for quickly hand-coding HTML. And today, a new version is out!

Here are some of the goodies version 0.7 brings to the party:

• Text nodes: Writing something like a[href=/]{Click here} now works, and puts "Click here" within the link.
• New actions added: Increment/decrement number under cursor, evaluate math expressions, and more.
• Wrap with Abbreviation was upgraded.

There are several other improvements but they're all rather technical. If you use Zen Coding (or are intrigued by the concept) go ahead and read the release notes for this new version.

Zen Coding has official implementations for a ton of editors, including TextMate, Apatana, Coda, E2, Komodo, Notepad++, PSPad, and more. It also has unofficial builds for Vim, UltraEdit, Visual Studio and more.

If you want to play with Zen Coding without installing it, you can use the online demo to see some of its magic in action.

Internet Explorer 9 nears 4% share on Windows 7, IE6 extinction countdown picks up steam

Microsoft has shared some news about the state of its most and least loved Web browsers -- Internet Explorer 9 and 6, respectively. Even with IE9 only recently exiting beta, Microsoft reports that 3.6% of Windows 7 users are now running the new browser (no mention of Vista... what's with that?). The post also reveals that the adoption rate is almost five times what IE8 garnered in the early going.

It's also interesting to note that there are now more than 1,000 sites utilizing Internet Explorer 9's Windows 7 integration features -- like the new desktop notification support we showed you in Hotmail.

But perhaps the best news of all is that Microsoft's IE6countdown.com now has more than 400 partners and is generating nearly two million pageviews per month, helping to lure users away from the woefully out-of-date browser. Can the end come soon enough, DS readers?

Words With Friends for Android updated, promises "smoother game experience"

As several of you noted in the comments to our post asking for cross-platform iOS/Android games, Words With Friends for Android does not provide the smoothest gaming experience... and that's being rather charitable.

You might be happy to hear that a couple of days ago Zynga released an update which promises to solve many of the Android-specific issues, such as notifications not popping up.

Sadly, installing the update is not a smooth experience; you have to manually uninstall the previous version, and then go to the Android Market and install it. What's nice is that it doesn't lose your saved games - this screenshot shows a game I've started before the update and continued after updating.

Hey Google, Your Nexus 7 Marketing Images Look Like Crap

No one understands why President Obama didn’t hammer Governor Romney on his 47% secret video comments during the first presidential debate. In hindsight, a mistake. Like President Obama, Google is throwing away its best ammunition against the iPad mini – pixel density – by publishing marketing materials that make the Nexus 7 look like a turd. I’ve been perusing the iPad mini reviews and am thinking about getting one. A big negative that most people are focusing on is the screen resolution, which is just 1024-by-768 at 163 pixels per inch (ppi). The iPad 3 by comparison is 326 ppi. “Ew, the screen is terrible” writes John Gruber (quoting someone else) “The iPad Mini costs too much, especially considering the lower resolution of its 7.9-inch non-Retina Display” says CNET. So 163 ppi isn’t all that bad, if we’re willing to live in 2010. Anyhow, I read that the Nexus 7, Google’s competing tablet, has similarly sized 1280×800 display but far more pixel density at 216 ppi. The Nexus 7 is also just $200 to the Ipad mini’s $329 (for 16 GB). So I’m thinking, maybe I’ll buy a Nexus 7. I haven’t been testing any Google hardware lately, since I moved to the iPhone last year. As I’m perusing the Google Nexus 7 site with screen quality on my mind I notice something. All the screen images on the device are absolute crap. Normally we all expect a little let’s say optimism in marketing materials for fast food and consumer electronics. But Google seems to be going the other way, showing a device putting out screen resolutions far below what they actually look like in person. A few examples: Here are a few from Apple’s iPad mini site: Based solely on those images, which one of these devices do you want in your hands? All of the above images were screen captured and then I played with the size with Skitch for this post. That distorts them somewhat, but you can go to the links above and see for yourself. My biggest complaint with Android devices in the past was fit and finish. Apple nails it, Google doesn’t. And even when Google has something to really show off, they fail to do it. Somebody in marketing needs to brush up on their photoshop skills, pronto. Pixelated and blurry images (and boring ones, too) don’t make me want to buy a
