BlackBerry 10 L-series tutorial videos surface online, give a literal peek at the future (video)

BlackBerry 10 Lseries tutorial videos surface online, give a literal peek at the future video

Those of us who've used a BlackBerry PlayBook will be familiar with the inevitable first-boot tutorials showing how to navigate the swipe-driven interface before we're let loose. Thanks to a series of demonstration videos leaked by BlackBerryItalia, it's apparent that we won't escape that educational process on BlackBerry 10 devices, either. The four clips show the basics of what we know the gesture experience will be like on full-touch L-series phones, including the signature BlackBerry Peek to check notifications and the unified inbox. Anyone looking for a direct clue as to what production BlackBerry 10 hardware will entail might be frustrated, mind you -- the rendered phone appears to be a placeholder rather than the L-series or a Dev Alpha B, and the device name is censored in an attempt to protect the source. That said, the clips provide a very straightforward explanation of the new interface concept and give us one more indication that RIM is closer to launch.

iMore Editors' Choice for September 30, 2012

Every week, the editors at iMore carefully select some of our favorite, most useful, most extraordinary apps, accessories, gadgets, and websites. This week's selections include an iPhone 5 case, an RPG game, a movie, and a popular photography app.

Gear4 Tread GT for iPhone 5 - Chris Oldroyd

I am really not one for cases on my iPhone, I usually just run them naked. This time however I have decided to put a case on my iPhone 5 purely down to all the scare mongering going around about chipped paint and dents in the back and the antenna band. The case I ended up selecting and to be fair there wasn't a great deal of choice, has really won me over and I actually like it.

The Gear4 Tread GT looks like it has been made from a car tire but is it is actually much more brittle than that and is not that rubbery either. Not being rubbery is really a good thing as you can slide it in and out of your pocket easily without it sticking. The case is well made and really looks very smart, all the cut outs are in the right place and it is a very good fit without adding lots of bulk to the slight iPhone 5. I can thoroughly recommend this case if you are looking for some minimal protection for your iPhone 5.

God of Blades - Simon Sage

God of Blades is a slight variation on the endless runner scheme. Instead of dodging obstacles, you charge into foes head-on, spinning, parrying, and slashing your way to the next. Though the gameplay is pretty straightforward (if reflex-driven) the story and setting are bound to rope you in. You play the role of the Nameless King, who has been risen from the dead to fight a timeless and barbaric foe. The King's people fight on in the background, but without help, they're doomed to galactic extinction. The story is epic in scope, mixing traditional fantasy elements with a surreal, awe-inspiring landscape. As you play, the Nameless King discovers new weapons to continue the good fight for his people. These blades all have their own legends and story which weave together and form an impressive historical tapestry. Give this one a shot if you're looking for a new kind of story in your usual hack-and-slashery.

The Avengers - Rene Ritchie

The Avengers are some of the most iconic, classical characters in comic books and Joss Whedon is one of the most iconic, modern writer-directors in Hollywood. Put them together and what do you get? Nearly two and a half hours of pure magic. Iron Man. Thor. Captain America. The Hulk. Black Widow. Hawkeye. Nick Fury. Whedon knows the characters well. As is his wont, he gets us to care about them, laugh with them, and then he tears them part in front of us.

The plot is clichéd, but this is a character piece, not a drama. It's about making Tony Stark understand sacrifice, Thor understand loss, Steve Rogers understand compromise, and Bruce Banner understand himself. The dialog is typical Whedon, smart and sassy, and the directing shows his confidence beyond the the confines of the small screen.

Juggling so many marquis characters is no easy task, and while the bigger guns get the bigger screen time, no one is entirely left out.

It's movie I've wanted to see since I was child, awed by the work of Lee and Kirby, Starlin and Perez, and more recently Miller and Hitch.

It's the Avengers, earth's mightiest heroes, writ upon the big screen. And I could watch it a hundred times over.

On iTunes, for Phone and iPad.

Or if you prefer, on 4 disc 3D/Blu-ray/DVD combo:

Instagram - Ally Kazmucha

I go through phases with Instagram and for some reason, forget it exists at times. Then I'll go through a picture taking phase and start using it again. Since it's been updated for the iPhone 5, I've been at it again and uploading more and more pictures.

The extra space on the iPhone 5 doesn't seem like much but when scrolling through tons of pictures it's appreciated. The fact that you can see a whole image and some comments without scrolling is a welcome addition. It'll be interesting to see how apps like Instagram will tailor their apps in the future to take advantage of the iPhone 5's additional screen real estate.

For now, the extra space is a welcome addition.

Your choice?

Now that we've chosen our favorites for the week, we want to hear yours! Did you pick up a killer app, accessory, or game this week? Let us know in the comments below!

Windows 8 now available to OEMs via Microsoft Connect

windows 8Select Microsoft Connect partners -- major players like HP -- have been given their first taste of Windows 8. According to various sources, the build string currently sits at 7971.0.110324-1900, which is the third milestone build of the successor to Windows 7.

So far, there haven't been many details revealed about Windows 8. An actual System Restore -- which is being referred to as History Vault -- has been reported, and the feature will allow users and administrators to completely roll back a system to a previous state. A factory reset option is also said to be included.

We've also seen Windows Live integration taking shape on the desktop. It's believed that you'll be able to log in to Windows 8 using your Windows Live credentials, not just a traditional offline Windows username and password.

All that's left now is for a leaked Windows 8 build to show up on a torrent site. Feel free to tip us if you see that happen.

Thousands of iPad Apps Is that All it Has to Offer?

The mad rush to get hold of an iPad certainly led a lot of people to believe that this nifty little gadget would put a smart phone to shame. Texas Instruments not leaving mobile after all

Android Central

There was some talk that Texas Instruments would be getting out of the mobile game a few days ago, but a TI rep has clarified the company's position just a bit. Mobile is still in the picture, but they're looking to make their products suitable for automotive, industrial, enterprise communication, vision, and robotics fields as well. TI also reported that the first OMAP 5 consumer products should be hitting shelves in early 2013.

It's good to hear that TI isn't completely abandoning mobile, even if it means they won't be focusing on it in as specifically as before. I've seen some really impressive OMAP tech demos at TI's booth at the last two Mobile World Congress events, and it would be a shame to lose out on that innovation and see it head towards other sectors. On the other hand, with Samsung, Apple, Qualcomm, and Nvidia all in the mix, the smartphone and tablet processor market has become quite competitive.

OMAP 4 is still at the heart of Amazon tablets and a handful of other devices. Any big OMAP fans out there that are looking forward to version 5? Have you developed a preference for any particular type of processor?

HTML5 MP3 player lets you listen to your music library inside your browser

html5 browser mp3 audio player
While this slick little HTML5 audio player might not pack all of the features of your favorite desktop media application, it's still a very cool demonstration of what a Web app can do with access to local resources -- like MP3 and OGG files.

Just fire up http://antimatter15.github.com/player/player.html in your HTML5-compatible browser and browse to the topmost folder in your music library. The app will quickly build an index of all your tunes and let you start listening right inside your Web browser. Click on the filter library text, and you can enter a search string -- results load as you type.

There's a volume control, shuffle mode, play/pause control, and you can click and drag to skip forward or rewind during playback. As OMG! Ubuntu points out, you can even save the app to your hard drive and run it offline, which is pretty darn cool.

Not all browsers are equal when it comes to HTML5 implementation, of course. We found that Chrome worked the best, and Firefox was OK. It's also worth noting that this music player comes from the same developer that created one of our favorite restartless Firefox 4 add-ons, drag2up.

How Many Icons Do You Have On Your Desktop [Chatroom]

There are plenty of ways to keep a desktop. On the one hand, it's kind of like your default folder, immediately displayed to you on login. It's a convenient place for those things you need quick, like dozens of shortcuts. On the other hand, it's a homescreen, a homescreen, and shouldn't you keep your home clean and pristine? After all, that's what the start menu/launcher is for. More »

NPD: Android users chew an average 870MB of cellular data per month, youngest gobble the most

NPD Android users chew an average 870MB of cellular data per month, youngest gobble the most

Ever wonder how much data you burn through every month on average? If you're an Android user within the US, odds are that it's quite a lot. The NPD Group estimates that Americans of the Google persuasion typically consume about 870MB of data on cellular networks every month. While it's not an extreme amount next to the 2.5GB of WiFi usage, it's enough to give anyone second thoughts about coasting on a basic data plan -- and a reflection of how both 4G and media apps have changed our behavior. Not surprisingly, it's a younger crowd more comfortable with smartphones that's the most aggressive: the 18-24 set races through 1.05GB a month where the 55-plus audience uses a more modest (if still healthy) 750MB. We don't yet know how iOS stacks up in current conditions, but the NPD is promising a comparable look soon. Something tells us the iPhone 5's LTE will lead to just as much voraciousness.

New Firefox Nightly and Aurora logos unearthed, and how to enable channel switching

Firefox Nightly and Aurora logos
Later today, Firefox will undergo its biggest developmental upheaval ever. Mozilla-central, the source of nightly builds, will be renumbered to version 5 -- and at long last, after years of wallowing around version 1, Mozilla's rendering and layout engine, Gecko, will also have its version number updated to match Firefox.

Shortly thereafter, Firefox's new channel system will be implemented. Firefox 5a2 will be introduced as the first Aurora build, and we should also see a Firefox 6 Nightly build. While we we're not sure where they came from, one Sören Hentzschel seems to have unearthed the new Nightly and Aurora logos (see above), along with new About Firefox dialogs (after the break).

In other news, if you want to take a sneak peek at the new 'channel changing' technology that will be introduced in upcoming Firefox builds, head to about:config and create a new string called app.update.desiredChannel -- the value doesn't matter. Then open Help > About Firefox and you'll be able to switch channel, but it doesn't do anything just yet (image after the break). Here's hoping that Firefox channel switching is smoother than Chrome.

Bing begins roll out of HTML5-enhanced search interface

Bing transitions
Bing's new HTML5-and-CSS3-enhanced search interface, which was first demonstrated back in September 2010 to showcase the power of IE9, has started to roll out.

The most notable addition to the new interface is is smooth page transitions -- the fade in and out -- and navigation tabs (maps, images, videos, etc.) now persistently float at the top of the page. WinRumors is also reporting that a feature reminiscent of Google Instant search is being added to Bing, with page elements smoothly transitioning in and out as you type in your search query.

If you want to try out the new Bing UI, your best bet is to set your locale to United States - English and pray that you're part of the initial roll out. Alternatively, just wait a few days until MIX 2011, Microsoft's Web developer conference, which is when the new Bing UI should be officially launched.

New software uses facial recognition to defend against prying eyes

Having the right programs and hardware to keep the information on your display safe from prying eyes is never a bad idea, and new software from Oculis Labs offers a very interesting take on how to do just that. It's called PrivateEye, and it utilizes facial recognition to automatically pixelate the contents of your display when you look away.

If you step away from your system and someone else decides to sit down and poke around, PrivateEye will present a confusing jumble of garbled text. It'll even notify you if someone tries to peek over your shoulder -- and display a picture of your peeping Tom, throw up an alert, or sound an alarm.

Check out the video embed after the break, and share your thoughts in the comments!

Camera+ for iPhone updated for iOS 6 and iPhone 5, Camera+ for iPad now available

Camera+, the very popular photography app by tap tap tap, has been updated to support iOS 6 and the iPhone 5's larger display. You can now see more photos in your lightbox and have a larger editing preview area when working with your photos. In addition to the changes made to Camera+ for iPhone, tap tap tap has also released an iPad version of Camera+ into the App Store and with iCloud sync, you can keep your lightbox photos synced between all your devices -- as you take photos with your iPhone, they will automatically pop up on your iPad.

In addition to all the great features that come with Camera+ on the iPhone, the iPad version also includes the ability to brush on effects, layer two or more effects to your photos, straighten your photos while cropping, and other advanced adjustments including white balance, exposure, brightness, contrast, saturation sharpness, and red eye removal.

Now, I'm not one to take photos with my iPad, so I admit that I wasn't exactly excited to hear that Camera+ was available on the iPad because I didn't think I'd get much use out of it. However, with the ability to keep my lightboxes in sync between the iPhone and iPad and all the new capabilities included with the iPad version, I understand the hype. On the other hand, I can't help but ask why the ability to layer and brush on effects and all the other iPad-exclusive features were never, and still aren't, available on the iPhone version of Camera+.

Regardless, editing photos is always a much more pleasant experience on the iPad than on the iPhone, and for just a buck, Camera+ for iPad is a great choice -- especially if you're already a Camera+ for iPhone user.
